With two weeks of work in the books, my first paycheck in my [landlord's] pocket and some laundry going, it's time to finally get to the blog post about lunch with Kendall (who spends her free time doing fun things like this and this) last Thursday. We met for Chinese food, so of course, it's time for another installment of...ridiculous things said in fortune cookies!
You will be awarded some great honor.
To be fair, I think Kendall should have gotten this one, since she is being "awarded" the "great honor" of her first tag in a DL post. However, it was I who opened up this cookie. I'm being placed on a new account this week, which I guess, is something like being awarded a great honor. Third week, third account...complete with a road trip to Santa Clara pending. Gotta love that. "Some" is a fun choice of word, but in the overall scheme of fortunes, I suppose this is not such a bad one. Not a whole lot I can do with this. Kendall's, however...
Your good listening skills will open many doors.
To be fair, Kendall is a great listener. I am as well. The issue becomes retention...specifically, selective retention. We'll listen (to you, to each other, etc.), there is just often going to be a disconnect on what parts we retain. It may be a picky distinction, but it's not selective hearing. It's selective retention and processing. A lot of people have the issue of thinking what they say is really important and that all people everywhere should care. Sometimes, they are right. Most of the time, they are not.
I would like to delve further into this topic (and will at some point), but I am off to watch the Doyers get swept (hopefully).

Confucius Say...
No…this is not a reference to my Google chat status from yesterday. Rather, this is the lead-in to another part in a series that hasn’t run in a while.
Sarah did a fantastic job a couple posts ago covering “Things that are Underrated,” and with Canada Day now in the rear view, we’re going to continue with the international flavor. So, without further ado, I give you the next installment of...
“Useless, Nebulous Statements from Fortune Cookies”
“An unexpected event will soon bring you fortune.” Here’s hoping. Here’s also hoping that fortune is good, as nowhere in this statement is that guaranteed. We’ve all had runs of good and bad luck, but I think if we’re really honest with ourselves, (undoubtedly with a few exceptions) we create our own breaks. Opportunism worked for me in baseball (as a player and as a coach). Gotta keep refining use of it in other contexts.
“Any doubts you may have will disappear early this month.” I have lots of doubts. I doubt the veracity of the statements that come out of baked goods, for example. I doubt the Rangers are going to continue to pitch as well as they have and be in contention in the AL West at the end of the season. I doubt the market will come back to life in the near future. None of these will be disappearing early this month…or next month. You get the idea. Perhaps this is supposed to say “many” instead of “any.” That would be more true to the inexact, anti-absolute formula of most statements that come from fortune cookies, but that that, I would still say, “prooooooove iiiiiiiiiit.”
“Luck will be yours when you least expect it.” Much like the first item, I suppose this could be true, as it doesn’t specify what kind of luck or when it will strike. I could get hit by a car or attacked by a wild animal. If I’m really lucky, maybe I’ll get abducted by extraterrestrials…next Tuesday. Of course, there are also numerous possibilities of good fortune finding me sometime before the end of my life. I could win the lottery or meet the girl of my dreams. Somehow I doubt any of this will happen anytime in the foreseeable future, though. Hopefully that gets cleared up “early this month.”
One thing the Chinese people did get right was pyrotechnics. Everyone in the world, we love us some fireworks, so thanks to them, we have spectacular displays for major events. Of course, the one day that is synonymous with fireworks here in the US is coming up in a couple days. Doubtful I will be posting again before then, as it’s going to be weekend shenanigans starting tomorrow evening. Gotta love Thursday being the new Friday. Happy 4th to everyone! Party like rock stars, but be safe…my readership is abysmal as is…I can’t afford to lose any of you guys!

Fortune Cookie
Dinner w/ Mosh at Mongolian in C Town...quote list and commentary to follow:
"This coming Friday will be an exciting time for you."
OK...so I promised a quote list, but all I remember were my two gems about my car having the measles (because a tree dropped a bunch of crap on it and it had crazy spots everywhere) and about how there was no way Mongolian BBQ could be authentic (because no tribe of nomadic people was going to cruise around northern China with a freaking giant iron plate).
The humor in the fortune clearly links to prom this Friday night, which will be an adventure. Post-prom drinking atRobby's house one of the local bars (probably Dargan's...who's kidding who?) will include Mosh and Jordty. This is going to be a solid evening.
In other news, work is making me deserve, so updates have been few and far between. I apologize. Especially, since there is the story of last Saturday and me almost taking the first ejection of my coaching career. I was right. The umpire was wrong. I kind of wish I had gotten tossed now, because that zero actually admitted it after the fact. He could have spent the back end of that game knowing he ran me for being right. Garbage.

Addendum to Previous
Found another fortune on my desk...
"You will discover a new area of interest." Good...because I'm losing the interest I'd had in a previous one...quickly. Greek mythology is moderately fascinating for a period of time, in a certain context, but it's never really been my thing.

Revisiting an Old Favorite
In getting back to what was once a standard feature of the old myspace blog days, I've decided to blog about fortunes...not the cash money variety, though. The kind that come out of cookies and feed us inane "wisdom" by which we are supposed to live. Don't thank me. Thank Panda Express.
"A note full of cheer is coming from a loved one." Well, I am having lunch with my dad tomorrow...the purpose of which is so I can sign a criminal subpoena that states I am on call to appear at the Van Nuys location of the Superior Court of the Los Angeles Judicial District on Cinco de Mayo (Can you say fiesta?!), so I guess somewhere there is accuracy there. [Insert your own punchline.]
"A much needed vacation will bring a great deal of enjoyment." I don't think anyone will debate that should happen. I just don't think anyone believes that it will. Ever. (Even on the last multi-day vacation I had, which was the cross country roadie with Toph D last August, I took a conference call...from Iowa. This story is 100% true, and I am sure my brother will corroborate it with a comment. Sorry, again, about all the good songs I made you miss because we had to mute the XM.)
"You will always have good luck in your personal affairs." Uh...false.
"An admirer is too shy to greet you." I struggle with this one, as I find it hard to believe anyone could admire anyone else without interacting with said individual. Really...it makes no sense. Plus, I'm about as threatening as a teddy bear. If you're too shy to talk to me, that is going to be a sticking point regardless, so, this is probably a wash anyway.
"Someone is speaking well of you." Good for me. Unfortunately, someone (and probably multiple someones) is (are) also off talking smack.
"You are admired for your adventurous ways." This must be the admirer who is too shy to greet me and thus, doesn't realize that I'm really not that adventurous.
"Past inspirations and experiences will be helpful in your job." This one is actually very true...except that the driving factor is fear. I have a fear that I will be plunged back into the black hole if despair that was my first job. I loved coaching (still do), and I wouldn't trade that experience for the world, but the only purpose my first job served was to drive into my head (brutally at times) that I am not cut out to work in education. I'm glad people do. God bless them. I am not one of these people.
"Beautiful things await you." Proooooooooove iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.
"People find it difficult to resist your persuasive manner." I can think of at least one person who has no such difficulty.
This link is unrelated to my persuasive manner, but please hit it anyway. I don't care if you watch it, but it will be help with a school project. Thanks! [doooooo iiiiiiiiiiiit]

Panda Express Fortune
"A much needed vacation will bring a great deal of enjoyment."
Proooooooooooooooooove iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit
(However, when fast food Chinese restaurants you frequent for a quick bite to take back to the office and scarf down at your desk are telling you to take a vacation, it might be time to think about it.)
